Local Nordic Club Website

Peterbrorugh Nordic Club | Website Design

Website redesign & digital presence for nordic skiers across Peterborough & the Kawarthas.

The Peterborough Nordic Club is a not-for-profit organization in Peterborough, founded in 2016. It maintains ski trails (classic & skate) at the Lift Lock Golf Club, and offers memberships, rentals, trail maps, pass-purchasing, and community engagement for both seasoned skiers and newcomers.

The club approached Loon in the Mist Creative, under its former name OmniWorx Design, to modernize their online presence: they wanted a site that would serve as a hub for information, be very user-friendly, and quickly get people onto the trails.

Problem & Strategic Objectives

Client Needs

  • Build a site that centralizes all core information in an intuitive, single-page or minimal-page experience.

  • Design navigation and content so each type of visitor can find what they need quickly (e.g. trail map, condition updates, contact).

  • Integrate social media feed or live updates so users can see current trail conditions or announcements.

  • Use photography and imagery prominently to evoke the feel of Nordic skiing, snow, trails, nature

  • Use a platform and design that is accessible, maintainable, and efficient (for both users and administrators)

Strategic Goals

  1. Provide simplicity & accessibility: clean design, quick load, easy access to key info

  2. Ensure visual storytelling: evoke the outdoor experience to draw new visitors

  3. Support multi-use usability: different visitor types have different needs; site must serve all well

  4. Make information real-time or easily updated (trail maps, conditions)

  5. Use a platform one that’s cost-effective and easy for the board to manage

Our Approach

Platform & Architecture

  • Chose Squarespace (version 7.1) for its ease of editing, reliable hosting, and suitability for non-profit maintenance.

  • Opted for a single-page (or minimal page) site design so all essential information is present without much navigation overhead.

Information Prioritization & Layout

  • Identified the core user flows:

    1. Someone new finds the club → wants to know what it is / how to get started

    2. A local or visitor wants trail map / current conditions

    3. Interest in rentals, passes, membership

    4. Need to contact the board or get involved

  • Organized content so those flows are immediately available, often via prominent menu items or in-page anchors. For example: “Trail Map”, “Passes & Rentals”, “Membership”, “Trail Conditions” via Instagram link.

Visuals & Engagement

  • Incorporated photography of people skiing, snowshoeing, trails — to both inspire and orient visitors.

  • Designed the site with imagery sections (hero background, trail imagery) to carry the feeling of the trails.

  • Enabled quick access to maps (trail map), rentals, pass purchase info — making sure that even someone already on the trails can find what they need.

Accessibility & Usability

  • Ensured the design is accessible: readable text, clear navigation, mobile-friendly layouts.

  • “First time visitor / school group / already on the trails” use-cases were part of content planning. Useful info is reachable in minimal clicks.

  • Integrated a contact form so visitors or prospective members can contact the board easily.

Outcomes & Impact

In the immediate period following launch, the site achieved:

  • Much easier discovery of trail-map, pass/rental info, membership, users report finding what they need more quickly.

  • Improved user experience for mobile / on-trail access (people can pull up the trail map or rental info on their phones).

  • More effective communication of trail conditions (via Instagram link), reducing confusion about closure or status.

  • The board has an easier time updating content and maintaining the site with minimal effort thanks to the Squarespace backend.

  • Likely increased engagement: more website traffic from new visitors, potentially more rentals / memberships / inquiries (though specific metrics not publicly detailed).
